People & Places
Neighbors, organizations, businesses, churches and places helping our communities shine.
Spotlighting the good, the useful and the worth-celebrating across Walterboro and every corner of Colleton County.
There is so much good in our community, and sometimes it does not get the attention it deserves. Walterboro Shines exists to put a spotlight on that good.
We want to celebrate the people who make a difference, the businesses and organizations doing good work, the places and traditions we are proud of, the opportunities available to our neighbors, and the everyday moments that remind us why this is home.
That does not mean pretending everything is perfect. It means making sure the good is not overlooked. It means noticing what is working, sharing what is helpful, recognizing people who deserve recognition, and reminding one another of the many things we have to be thankful for.
Walterboro and Colleton County have stories worth telling, and we want more people to see them.
I shine. You shine. Together we shine, because Walterboro shines.
Walterboro Shines began as a Facebook page on August 30, 2026. The response came quickly. In less than a month, the page grew to more than 300 followers and passed 150,000 views. By September 2026, it had reached more than 160,000 views.
But the numbers were only part of the story. Within the first week, people in our own community were already reaching out through Messenger asking Walterboro Shines to spotlight an event, share something good they were contributing to the community, or help more people know what was happening around them.
That was beautiful to see, and it showed us just how much need there is for a place where local people can be seen, heard, connected and helped.
Facebook helped us discover the need. The website gives us room to serve it. Important events, resources, opportunities and community information should not disappear simply because a social media post moves down the feed. We will also keep the Walterboro Shines Facebook page active as a place for discussion, comments, sharing and everyday community conversation. The website and Facebook page are meant to work together, with the website serving as the organized community resource and Facebook remaining a place where the community can talk with us and with one another.
Our goal is for WalterboroShines.com to become an important, trustworthy and genuinely useful community resource for Walterboro, Colleton County and beyond — a place where people can find local events, practical resources, opportunities, stories, businesses, services and the information they need to better connect with this community.
Neighbors, organizations, businesses, churches and places helping our communities shine.
Stories that preserve where we came from and the traditions worth carrying forward.
Upcoming events, youth and family activities, open jobs and opportunities people can actually use.
Food distributions, support programs, community services and practical information that can make someone’s day easier.
Milestones, accomplishments, acts of kindness and the everyday good that deserves a little more light.
Factual, community-centered pieces that help neighbors know their county and one another better.
Walterboro Shines is not an opinion-writing platform. Contributor pieces should be factual, community-focused and useful. We are here to spotlight, inform, preserve and connect, not to publish personal arguments or opinion columns.
Walterboro Shines cannot see every event, tradition, opportunity, business update or community moment on its own. That is why local knowledge matters.
You can send us an occasional tip, photograph, event notice, local-history lead, correction or story idea whenever you have something useful to share. You do not have to become a regular writer or keep a schedule.
Walterboro Shines will handle verification and editorial decisions. If we later engage someone to perform regular work for the business, compensation and terms will be handled separately.

Walterboro Shines was created by Lisa, a Walterboro resident since 1998 and an online freelance writer since 2002. She is also an enterprise reporter, which means her work goes beyond simply writing what is already known. She researches, verifies, follows records and sources, asks deeper questions and develops original reporting around issues that matter to the community.
Over the years, Lisa has created and organized digital content, promoted community information, worked with people and organizations, and turned ideas into practical projects. She is the founder of One Creative Virgo in the ’Boro, her independent creative and content business. Walterboro Shines brings those skills together in a community-focused setting, with Lisa serving as its founder, editor, researcher, content creator and community builder.
Walterboro Shines and One Creative Virgo in the ’Boro serve different purposes. Walterboro Shines is the community platform. One Creative Virgo is Lisa’s independent commercial creative work. Keeping those roles clear helps protect the trust and editorial independence of Walterboro Shines.
The goal is still not to make the person behind the page the center of attention. Walterboro Shines is about the people, places, history, resources and everyday stories that make this community what it is.
I’m not what shines here. Walterboro is.
